A Tribute to a Life of Courage and Service

The American College, Madurai, hosted a special homecoming on 01 December 2025 to welcome Thiyagi Thiru. K. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi, revered freedom fighter, former Madurai Collector, and distinguished alumnus of the 1942–43 batch. The event marked a deeply significant moment as the college honoured an alumnus whose life exemplifies courage, public service, and unwavering commitment to the nation.

Organised by the Alumni Association of The American College, the programme was held under the theme “A Tribute to a Century of Courage & Service.” The Principal & Secretary, Dr. J. Paul Jayakar, delivered the welcome address and formally honoured the distinguished guest. Dr. V. P. Sagimaynonathan, Director of the Alumni Association, introduced Thiru. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi, tracing his extraordinary journey from a sixteen-year-old participant in the Quit India Movement—who endured six months of imprisonment—to a respected IAS officer who later served the nation in key administrative roles.

Addressing students, faculty, and alumni, Thiru. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi delivered an inspiring talk titled “WHAT NEXT?” In his address, he reflected on his formative years at The American College and emphasised that true education awakens purpose, character, and a sense of responsibility toward society. He fondly recalled the influence of the then Principal, Edgar M. Flint, whose leadership and personal sacrifices, he noted, shaped an entire generation of students.

The occasion stood as a powerful reminder of the enduring values nurtured at The American College—integrity, service, and leadership. The event not only celebrated an extraordinary life but also reaffirmed the College’s role in shaping individuals who contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.
